India: N-capable missile test fired for second time

On Tuesday 8th, India has successfully test-fired its nuclear-capable Prithvi-II surface-to-surface missile from a military base in Odisha for the second time in two days, a senior defence official said.

The indigenously-developed ballistic missile with a maximum range of 350 km was fired from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur-on-sea in Balasore district, about 230 km from Bhubaneswar. The missile was earlier successfully tested from the same defence base on Monday 7th.

Prithvi is India's first indigenously-built ballistic missile and one of the five missiles being developed under the country's Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme. The battlefield missile, with flight duration of 483 seconds and reaching a peak altitude of 43.5 km, can carry a 500-kg warhead with a higher lethal effect compared to equivalent competitors in the world.

Last but not least, the missile has features to deceive anti-ballistic missiles and uses an advanced inertial guidance system with manoeuvring capabilities allowing it to reach its target within a few metres of accuracy. 

India: Prithvi-II test fired

Nuclear weapons capable surface-to-surface missile Prithvi-II was successfully test-fired for a range of 300 km by a missile regiment unit of the Strategic Forces Command from Chandipur, Odisha, on Monday 7th.

Although the single-stage, liquid propelled Prithvi-II has a strike range of 350 km, it was tested for 300 km in Monday’s launch. The missile was picked up randomly from the production lot and fired at 9.15 am by the SFC personnel from a road mobile launcher as part of regular training to prove the preparedness of the user.

After a flight of around seven minutes, the missile equipped with a high-precision navigation system zeroed in onto the pre-designated target in the Bay of Bengal with an accuracy of around 20 metres. The radars, electro-optical tracking systems along the coast and the telemetry equipment in a downrange ship near the target point monitored the performance of the missile during the flight and recorded the terminal event.

India: Exito en las pruebas del Prithvi II

India ha probado con éxito el misil nuclear Prithvi-II, como parte de una serie de maniobras de sus Fuerzas Armadas.

Este misil tierra-tierra monoetapa de corto alcance (350 Km) es el primero desarrollado por el Programa de Desarrollo de Misiles Guiados Integrados de India. Va impulsado por dos motores de propulsión líquida y utiliza un sistema inercial avanzado para ejecutar las maniobras de trayectoria. En cuanto a su capacidad destructiva merece destacarse que puede transportar ojivas de entre 500 y 1.000 Kg.

La nación surasiática también dispone de la serie Agni cuya última versión puede golpear objetivos a más de cinco mil kilómetros, y del Brahmos, este último desarrollado en cooperación con Rusia. Todos pueden transportar ojivas nucleares y forman parte de la carrera armamentista que la nación surasiática mantiene con el vecino Pakistán, que también fabrica sus propios misiles balísticos.
